BoldDocServer replaces Office Online Server for organizations that run SharePoint Server. Users open Word, Excel and PDF files from their libraries in the browser, edit and save back to the same file, and every document stays inside your network.
BoldDocServer is built by Syncfusion. For more than 25 years, Syncfusion customers have included:
A Linux container you run next to SharePoint Server, behind your own reverse proxy or load balancer.
Deployment and requirementsDocuments stay in SharePoint. Each session uses a token SharePoint issues for one user and one file, over HTTPS.
Security and data controlPer end-user subscription, billed yearly. Rates fall from 100 end-users, to $2.10 a month from 501.

RecommendedSee how it worksWhen someone opens a file, SharePoint launches BoldDocServer through WOPI. SharePoint keeps the files and permissions; BoldDocServer provides the editor in the browser.
Step 3 of 3 · Save back to SharePoint: Version 4.0 is stored in the library
Users open files straight from their SharePoint library. Each format opens in its own Syncfusion component in the browser, and Word and Excel changes are saved back through WOPI.

BoldDocServer writes supported changes to the original file through WOPI. SharePoint adds the new version to the file’s history, so there are no downloaded copies to reconcile.
BoldDocServer adds browser editing without adding a new place for documents to live. Every request passes the controls you already run.

One Linux container on a host you manage, next to SharePoint Server. Your team keeps control of the network, the certificates and the release schedule.
BoldDocServer ships as a versioned Docker image for Linux. The same tested image moves from test to staging to production.
It serves HTTPS with your own certificate, behind the reverse proxy or load balancer you already run.
SharePoint is pointed at BoldDocServer with a WOPI binding. Libraries and documents stay where they are, and you keep a way back.
Requirements, installation and the SharePoint connection are documented step by step for your administrators.
Prove it on your own farm before you buy, then roll it out on your schedule. Documentation covers every step, and Syncfusion support and sales are there when you need a person.

BoldDocServer is a self-hosted document solution from Syncfusion that provides browser-based viewing, editing, and collaborative editing for Word (DOCX), Excel (XLSX), and PDF documents integrated with SharePoint Server through WOPI.
There are three kinds of options: keep running Office Online Server without support after December 31, 2026; move your documents to Microsoft 365; or keep SharePoint Server and replace only the editing layer with a WOPI-based solution such as BoldDocServer, which provides browser-based viewing, editing, and collaboration while SharePoint remains your document repository.
For SharePoint Server, yes: BoldDocServer takes over browser viewing and editing through the same WOPI protocol. Office Online Server can also serve Exchange Server and Skype for Business Server. BoldDocServer is designed for SharePoint Server, so plan those workloads separately.
BoldDocServer supports Word (DOCX) and Excel (XLSX) viewing and editing, and PDF viewing, review, and supported editing and annotation operations. Collaborative editing is available for supported document types.
$3.50 per end-user per month, billed yearly as a company subscription, with graduated volume pricing from 100 users, down to $2.10 per user per month above 500 users.
