Self-hosted Docker image · Linux container

By downloading BoldDocServer, you agree to the End User License Agreement.

Your trial license key

Valid for 30 days from activation.

Your license key appears here

You will paste this key into BOLD_DOC_SERVER_LICENSE in step 2. Keep it private, like a password.

Getting started

Deploy BoldDocServer and connect SharePoint

Before you start

Have these 4 things ready
  1. Docker Engine and Compose

    Set to run Linux containers.

    On your Docker host
  2. Your trial license key

Copy it from the card at the top of this page.

    Ready above
  3. HTTPS hostname, certificate and private key

SharePoint and browsers must trust the certificate.

    For BoldDocServer
  4. SharePoint Server 2016, 2019 or Subscription Edition

A farm administrator completes step 5. Start with a test farm.

    On your SharePoint server

Example addresses

Replace these with your own in the steps below.

BoldDocServer

https://bolddocserver.example.com

Your deployed container service.

SharePoint

https://sharepoint.example.com

Your SharePoint server.

On your Docker host

Step 1: Create the deployment folder

Use either terminal. Then save your certificate chain and private key in the new certs folder as certificate.crt and private-key.key.

macOS or Linux terminal
mkdir -p bold-doc-server/certs
cd bold-doc-server

Windows PowerShell
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force -Path .\bold-doc-server\certs | Out-Null
Set-Location .\bold-doc-server

File: bold-doc-server/compose.yaml

Step 2: Create the Compose file

Save the file on the right as compose.yaml. Replace the three highlighted values.

Replace these 3 values

  1. Image tag. Use a fixed release tag from Docker Hub ↗.
  2. License. Paste your trial key from the top of this page.
  3. Service URL. Your BoldDocServer HTTPS address.

Uses HTTPS on port 443. Keep this file private and out of source control.

compose.yaml
services:
  app:
    image: syncfusion/bold-doc-server:<release-tag>
    container_name: bold-doc-server
    restart: unless-stopped
    environment:
      BOLD_DOC_SERVER_LICENSE: "<paste-your-license-key>"
      WOPI_HOST_URL: "https://bolddocserver.example.com"
      SSL_CERT_PATH: /https/certificate.crt
      SSL_KEY_PATH: /https/private-key.key
    ports:
      - "443:443"
    volumes:
      - ./certs:/https:ro

On your Docker host

Step 3: Start the server

From the bold-doc-server folder, run these two commands.

Terminal
docker compose up -d
docker compose ps

Expected result: the app service shows as running.

Check your BoldDocServer address

Step 4: Check that it responds

Use your own BoldDocServer hostname. On Windows PowerShell, use curl.exe.

macOS or Linux terminal
curl -i https://bolddocserver.example.com/hosting/discovery

Expected result: HTTP 200 and discovery XML. Action URLs start with your WOPI_HOST_URL.

On your SharePoint server

Step 5: Connect SharePoint

A farm administrator runs these commands in SharePoint Management Shell.

Use the BoldDocServer hostname only. Leave out https:// and any path.

SharePoint must be able to reach the discovery URL and trust its certificate. Check existing bindings before removing any.

A. Review and record existing settings

SharePoint Management Shell
Get-SPWOPIZone
Get-SPWOPIBinding

B. Register BoldDocServer

SharePoint Management Shell
New-SPWOPIBinding -ServerName "bolddocserver.example.com"

C. Select your WOPI zone (external HTTPS example; confirm the zone first)

SharePoint Management Shell
Set-SPWOPIZone -Zone "external-https"

D. Confirm the binding

SharePoint Management Shell
Get-SPWOPIBinding -Server "bolddocserver.example.com"

Expected result: bindings for DOCX, XLSX and PDF.

In your SharePoint document library

Step 6: Test with a document

Run this short check to confirm everything works end to end.

  1. 1Open a DOCX file from SharePoint in BoldDocServer.
  2. 2Edit and save.
  3. 3Reopen it from SharePoint. Confirm your change was saved.
  4. 4Repeat steps 1 to 3 with an XLSX file: open, edit, save and reopen it.
  5. 5Repeat steps 1 to 3 with a PDF file: open, edit, save and reopen it.

Your trial is ready to evaluate

Word, Excel and PDF files open, edit and save back to SharePoint.
